Filipinos have always been, and continue to be, creative when it comes to flavor combinations. Kutsinta is a classic Filipino kakanin that can be eaten as is but it is typically topped with coconut shreds. It has come a long way, with creative takes on the kutsinta such as the popular black kutsinta with a dulce de leche dip.

A new kutsinta with well-loved Filipino flavors that you need to to try is Ube Kutsinta with Pandan Dip (P65/tub of 20 pieces).

In Binangonan, Rizal, Carlean's peddles different kinds of Filipino delicacies but they are famous for their black kutsinta. Carlean's new Ube Kutsinta is a soft, violet-colored kutsinta with a mild ube flavor (they use ube flavoring and real ube!). The kutsinta itself is not too sweet, which is why the creamy, milky, and sweet pandan dip works well with it. If you want to add a crunchy texture, you can sprinkle lots of the toasted niyog on top!

Who would have thought that ube and pandan would go well together? According to Carla Paez, the owner of Carlean's, "Yung father ko po kasi, lagi sya gumagawa ng ube halaya, tapos habang niluluto niya po nilalagyan niya pandan leaves and naaamoy namin na mabango sya. So kami nung husband ko, 'Why not gumawa ng kutsinta na ube flavored?' Then, instead, na caramel dip yung ilalagay namin just like yung sa black kutsinta, we decided na since we want something different and new to the tastebuds. We tried pandan." (My father used to always make ube halaya, but when he cooks it, he adds pandan leaves. We found the smell to be fragrant. My husband and I thought, 'Why not make ube-flavored kutsinta?' But instead of the caramel dip we use in the black kutsinta, we decided to add something different and new to the tastebuds. We tried pandan!)

Carlean's is located at 0518 National Road, Binangonan, Rizal. For more information, follow Carlean's on Facebook.
