A basic pie crust is an essential recipe that any baker should know. It's the flakey pastry that complements the buko pie filling, the pastry that cradles the cinnamon-scented and sweetened apples in apple pies, and the crumbly crust that holds the egg custard of your local panaderya egg pie.

What is a pie?

A pie is a baked dish with a crust and a filling. It can be covered with a top crust or it can be left uncovered. The filling meanwhile can be either sweet or savory. Sweet fillings include fruit fillings such as blueberry, strawberry, banana, and apple fillings or creamy fillings such as chocolate, custards, or nuts in a sweetened egg and dairy mixture. Savory fillings can be in the form of eggs, seasoned ground meat, or even vegetables.

What is a pie crust?

A pie crust is the pastry layer between the pie plate and the filling, normally made of a simple dough made from wheat flour, water, and butter or fat to create a flaky pastry that can hold the filling as it bakes and sets.

You can easily make a basic pie crust at home with this step-by-step recipe and video guide. To create a more stunning presentation for your pie, you can make a lattice design as your top crust so your filling can peek-a-boo through the spaces between the patterns of the crust.
