Amp up the flavors of your usual fried tokwa recipe with this sweet, spicy, and garlicky sauce.

Fried tofu squares are lightly coated with the flavorful homemade sauce, but the trick to getting it super tasty is this: tossing the sauce and the tofu in a hot pan so the tofu is not only coated in the sauce, but it can also absorb the flavors, too.

Ingredients
  

Chili Garlic Tofu Ingredients

  • 500 Grams firm tofu (tokwa) cut into cubes
  • 3 cloves Garlic chopped
  • 1 Small red onion chopped small
  • 2 tablespoons chili garlic sauce
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Soy Sauce
  • 1 teaspoon sesame seeds toasted
  • 1 bird’s eye chili (siling labuyo) chopped (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch diluted in 1 tablespoon water
  • Oil for frying and sautéing

Instructions
 

  • In a frying pan over medium heat with enough oil to reach halfway up the sides of the pan, fry the tofu cubes until golden brown on all sides. Drain on a rack over paper towels. Set aside.
  • Meanwhile, in a wok over medium heat, heat about 1 tablespoon oil and sauté garlic and onion until just translucent. Add chili garlic sauce, sugar, soy sauce, and siling labuyo, if using. Bring to a simmer, and let thicken slightly.
  • Add fried tofu to the wok and toss. Add cornstarch mixture, and toss again. Cook, while tossing, until the sauce thickens. Transfer to a serving plate. Serve while hot.
