This Asian classic is quick and easy to do!
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 piece red onion, minced
1 kilo beef, use ribs
1/2 cup soy sauce
1 piece beef bouillon cube, or 1 teaspoon beef powder dissolved in 4 cups water
1 piece star anise
1/3 cup brown sugar
4 tablespoons sesame oil
4 tablespoons sesame seeds, toasted
1 stalk leeks, sliced diagonally
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
fish sauce (patis), to taste
black pepper, to taste
green onion, chopped, (for garnish)
Heat oil in a pot. Saute garlic and onions until garlic is fragrant and onions are translucent. Add beef; cook until browned, about 10 minutes.
¬†Pour in soy sauce and beef stock just to cover the beef. If stock isn't enough, add water. Add star aniseand brown sugar. Bring to a boil, then lower heat and simmer for 45 to 60 minutes or until beef is tender.
Add sesame oil, sesame seeds, leeks and cayenne pepper. Simmer for an additional 5 minutes.
¬†Season with fish sauce and pepper. Transfer to a serving platter and garnish with green onions.
