This Asian classic is quick and easy to do!
2 tablespoons vegetable oil
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 piece red onion, minced
1 kilo beef, use ribs
1/2 cup soy sauce
1 piece beef bouillon cube, or 1 teaspoon beef powder dissolved in 4 cups water
1 piece star anise
1/3 cup brown sugar
4 tablespoons sesame oil
4 tablespoons sesame seeds, toasted
1 stalk leeks, sliced diagonally
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
fish sauce (patis), to taste
black pepper, to taste
green onion, chopped, (for garnish)
Heat oil in a pot. Saute garlic and onions until garlic is fragrant and onions are translucent. Add beef; cook until browned, about 10 minutes.
Pour in soy sauce and beef stock just to cover the beef. If stock isn't enough, add water. Add star aniseand brown sugar. Bring to a boil, then lower heat and simmer for 45 to 60 minutes or until beef is tender.
Add sesame oil, sesame seeds, leeks and cayenne pepper. Simmer for an additional 5 minutes.
Season with fish sauce and pepper. Transfer to a serving platter and garnish with green onions.
