Hong Kong-Style Beef Brisket Ingredients

  • 1 kilo beef brisket sliced into 1 1/2-inch pieces
  • 6 cups water
  • 1/2 Cup anisado or Chinese rice wine
  • 1 large white onion quartered
  • 1 2-inch piece ginger sliced into ruonds
  • 2 pieces birds eye chilies (siling labuyo)
  • 3 pieces bay leaves
  • 2 pieces star anise
  • 1 piece cinnamon bark
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 teaspoons ground black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
  • 1/2 Cup Light soy sauce
  • 1/4 Cup cane vinegar
  • 500 Grams labanos or daikon (Korean radish) peeled and sliced into half moons
  • 2 medium carrots peeled and sliced into rounds
  • 2 tablespoons green onions chopped
  • 3 tablespoons Leeks chopped, optional
  • egg noodles to serve
  • rice to serve


  • Place beef and pour water in a pot over medium-high heat. Boil beef for 30 minutes, removing impurities that rise to the top.
  • Add cooking wine, onion, ginger, chilies, bay leaves, star anise, cinnamon, sugar and pepper to the pot. Lower heat and simmer until beef is almost tender, about 1 to 1 1/2 hours.
  • Add hoisin sauce, light soy sauce, and vinegar. Simmer for another 30 minutes to 1 hour or until beef is tender.
  • Add radish and carrots, and simmer until tender, about 10 minutes. Transfer to a serving bowl. Top with green onions and leeks. Serve warm with egg noodles.
