Here’s our take on Vietnam’s popular banh mi sandwich. In a pinch, you can also substitute the seasoned pork with roasted pork slices from your favorite Chinese restaurant.

Pork and Chinese Sausage Sandwich with Asian Slaw

  • 1/2 Cup water
  • 1/4 Cup sugar
  • 1/4 Cup white wine vinegar
  • 1/2 Cup carrot julienned
  • 1/2 Cup Daikon (Korean Radish) juliened
  • Salt to season
  • 1 teaspoon vegetable oil
  • 1 tablespoon onion finely chopped
  • 6 slices pork use pork loin
  • 1 tablespoon char siu barbecue sauce
  • a pinch of Garlic powder
  • a pinch of black pepper
  • 4 (6-inch) baguette (French bread) sliced in half, llengthwise
  • mayonnaise as needed
  • 4 pieces Chinese sausage sliced and fried
  • Lettuce
  • 4 teaspoons Soy Sauce
  • black pepper
  • Asian-Style Chili Oil to taste (optional)
  • 1/4 Cup cilantro sprigs (Optional)


  • Make the Asian slaw: Combine water, sugar, and vinegar in a small saucepan. Bring to a boil. Transfer vinegar mixture to a bowl and cool. Add carrots and daikon; mix well and season with salt. Set aside to marinate for 30 minutes or store in the refrigerator overnight. .
  • Make the seasoned pork: Heat oil in a small nonstick pan over medium heat. Add onions and sauté until soft. Add pork, barbecue sauce, garlic powder, and pepper. Cook, stirring, for 2 to 3 minutes or until just cooked through. Remove from heat. Set aside and cover with foil to keep warm.
  • Arrange baguettes on a grill pan and toast until bread is crisp. Spread mayonnaise on the inside of each baguette. Fill with seasoned pork and 2 to 4 slices of Chinese sausage. Top with a spoonful of Asian slaw and shredded lettuce. Season with 1 teaspoon soy sauce, ground pepper, and chili oil. Garnish with a few sprigs of cilantro. Repeat with remaining ingredients to make a total of 4 sandwiches. Serve hot.
