Tuna Tataki with Pineapple Fried Rice Ingredients

  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 2 blocks fresh, sushi-grade tuna
  • 2 tablespoons canola oil
  • 1 Small red onion peeled, sliced
  • 2 cloves Garlic peeled, minced
  • 1/2 Cup frozen green peas thawed
  • 2 tablespoons water
  • 1/2 Cup red bell pepper seeds removed, cubed
  • 1 can Pineapple Tidbits drained (use 227-gram can)
  • 3 cups day-old brown rice
  • 2 tablespoons Soy Sauce more to serve
  • Salt to taste
  • ground black pepper to taste
  • wasabi paste to serve
  • calamansi to serve


  • Heat sesame oil in a nonstick pan over medium heat. Using tongs, sear tuna for 2 seconds on each side in the hot oil. Remove from heat, and set aside. Repeat with remaining tuna block. Wrap tuna in plastic wrap, and chill until ready to serve.
  • Heat canola oil in a wok over medium heat. Add and cook onion until translucent then add garlic. Cook until fragrant. Add peas and water. Bring to a boil. Cook until peas are bright green and tender, and water has mostly evaporated. Add red bell peppers and pineapples, and cook until heated through, stirring. Add rice, toss to mix, then add soy sauce. Toss to coat. Transfer to serving bowl. Set aside.
  • To serve, remove plastic wrap from tuna. Slice into serving pieces, and serve with rice and a side of soy sauce, wasabi paste, and calamansi. Recipe originally published in the Jan/Feb 2017 issue of Good Housekeeping Philippines.
