We asked our Yummy readers: how do you make your favorite desserts healthier at home?

The great thing about making desserts at home is that you know exactly why goes into them, and that you can control the amounts of sugar and fat that you place in your desserts. We asked our readers on what ingredient substitutions or backing hacks they use to make their homemade treats healthier, and this is what we got:

“I like to use beet juice as a natural alternative to red food coloring. I also like to add assorted vegetable juices to some desserts.” –Patricia Cruz

“You can make tasty brownies using avocados as a main ingredient, resulting in a fudgy and flourless snack!” –Moca Dator

“Make sure that the syrups you use, like agave, maple, and honey, are 100 percent natural. Avoide those that are diluted with high fructose corn syrup—all you have to do check the label.” –Cray Miranda

“I use rice malt syrup as a sugar substitute and all-around sweetener!” –Gisella Velasco

“I often use bananas as a substitute for butter when baking. Now, I’m exploring using chickpeas as a substitute for eggs.” –Jun Angelo Sunglao
